The most common intra-op and post-op spay/neuter complications will be presented and discussed along with recommended spectrum-of-care management plans. This program is about proactive approaches to manage and minimize complications and how best to prepare your clinic for when they do happen.

Learning Objectives:

  • Improve confidence managing intra-operative surgical complications and anatomic anomalies (i.e. hemoabdomens, cryptorchids, uterine tears, etc.)

  • Describe a diagnostic and management plan for the most common short term post-operative complications (i.e. inflammation, seroma, incisional dehiscence, incisional infection)

  • Understand indications for revision surgery vs. medical management post-op, and discuss surgical approach for re-cut procedures if indicated

  • Tips for follow up care: counseling caretakers and addressing clinic factors affecting patient and staff safety
