Home Alone: An Update on Canine Separation-Related Disorders

Separation-related disorder (SRD) remains one of the most common behavioral problem in the canine population, affecting up to 40% of canine patients in veterinary behavior specialty practices. They can be taxing to the human-animal bond by restricting the guardian’s ability to leave the home without their dog. This webinar will give an update on terminology and most recent research on the different types of SRDs. It will also discuss different treatment options, including medications and behavior modification.

- Correctly identify and diagnose separation-related disorders in dogs
- Identify medical and behavioral differential diagnoses for SRDs in dogs
- Discuss challenges of SRDs with clients
- Make a treatment plan for dogs with SRDs, including medication options and behavior modification

Dr. Claudia Richter, DVM, DACVB
Dr. Claudia Richter obtained her veterinary degree in Munich, Germany in 2004. She emigrated to Canada the same year and has been enjoying the Canadian life ever since. Dr. Richter practiced small animal general practice for over 10 years before starting her behavioral residency. She obtained Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 2024. Her special interests within behavioral medicine are pharmacology as well as the connection between behavioral and medical disorders. She also enjoys teaching and lecturing.
Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the outdoors of British Columbia and spending time with her animals.
